slouchy knit hat tutorial (2 ways)...and a video

Though I love to wear slouchy knit hats, I really love to make them. Especially when the itty-bitty head is involved. Also, its extremely cheap...only a little bit of fabric from some scraps or a shirt. Thanks to my husband we have a cute video that goes along with the tutorial. I might have watched it 1000000 times already, but I can't help it...Oli is so dang cute.
If you don't want to watch the whole thing, at least watch the very beginning and/or the very end because this squishy cheeked boy is to die for.

Supplies:
little bit of knit (I used a scrap), can be from an old shirt
scissors
pins
thread
sewing machine
measuring tape

Instructions:
1. Measure the circumference of your kid's head and the length from the bottom and back of their neck to the top of the head. Then cut out a rectangle that is the height of the hat times 2 plus 2 inches (for the slouchiness) and  the head circumference minus 2" or so for the stretch.  Make sure the stretchier part of the fabric runs along the head circumference side of the hat.
2. Fold in half right sides together.
3.  Sew one half end in a round shape.
4. Turn right side out and sew the other end in a round shape (sorry about the bad photoshop job here)
5. Push that end inside the hat.
6. Match the hat's ends up evenly inside each other and tack together the very top of the hats together.

Instructions:
1. Measure the circumference of your kid's head and the length from the bottom and back of their neck to the top of the head. Then cut out a rectangle that is the height of the hat plus 3 inches (for the hem and slouch) and  the head circumference minus 2" or so for the stretch.  Make sure the stretchier part of the fabric runs along the head circumference side of the hat.
2. Fold in half right sides together.
3.  Sew up the sides of the tube and round the top.
4. Fold the bottom in a quarter inch, then an inch. Sew a straight stitch along the fold while you stretch!

    1. Bonjour! Did you know that Liz's little brother is living in France? He was in Vannes and is now in Strasbourg. Such a small world isn't it. I (her mom) am trying to learn french to visit. I just worry that I won't be able to talk to anyone if I don't know french.

  20. I am new to sewing, please forgive me if this is simple... How would I make this so that the inside is smooth like the outside? I don't want my cut edges to show inside the hat. Thank you!
